Painting as an art has been undergoing changes from the ancient times. Artists took pleasure in transferring the basic "idea" in their mind to structural forms decorated by color. The free and liberal nature of the profession has brought out a large number of painting styles that has been undergoing drastic changes all these years.

Style of painting in general can be associated with the perspective of an individual artist's work and also the school the artist is associated with. The first association is in terms of visual elements, methods and techniques employed in the art of painting. Depending upon the school of painting, the artist can be associated with the group he was involved in, or the place given by the historians for the particular painter.

Painting styles can be differentiated with regard to the nature of the painting. Abstract, Constructivism, Fauvism, Impressionism, Modernism, Post modernism, Romanticism and Surrealism.

Abstract art does not depict objects in the real world. It is basically a non representational way of representing objects. The complicated structure and representation of idea in the painting reflects its detachment from figurative reality. It has certain intrinsic qualities that imitate its external appearance and the intended meaning would rarely be understood by the onlooker. Wassily Kandinsky is known to be the founder of abstract art.

Constructivism, on the other hand dismissed pure art in favor of art used for social purposes. The artistic movement was founded by Vladimir Tatlin, with Antoine Pevesner and Kazimir Malevich.

Henry Matissee is found to be the leader of the artistic movement called Fauvism. The style of the art was entirely different from the abstract art and Fauvist paintings. It employed the use of deeper colors, focusing on light and moment. The brightened colors and simplified lines made the paintings easy to decipher and figure out the meaning.

Impressionistic art employed short, thick strokes of paint in a stretchy way and the emphasis was mainly on the subject than on the details. There was ample intermingling of color and emphasized on natural light. The impressionist style was mainly thick painting than the process of layering.

A radical way of art, modernism totally rejected the traditional harmony in the paintings. Many artists who employed impressionism in their paintings believed in redefining art as the arrangement of pure color. They believed that the new technology rendered old styles of being obsolete.

The ultimate phase of modern art, postmodern art, uses the different genres of media and its style as part of an extended visual language. It is an art form that is difficult to define. Realism, on the other hand was in contrast with the earlier romanticism, and focused mainly on realistic themes.

There was a strong element of historical and natural inevitability in its ideas with nature as its main subject of importance. The paintings in this style depicted emotion in the utmost level. Romanticism was fully detached from the classical conventions of art.

The styles varied in the paintings depending upon the painter and his thought processes. There was no clear cut rules employed in the profession of painting except some schools of art. It is basically a liberal art form giving immense chance for the painter to express his colorful thoughts on canvas.
